Flexibility activation from multi-energy systems controlled by timed automata

Authors: Edoardo Corsetti & Vincenzo Casamassima (RSE)

This paper proposes the simulation of the ancillary service provision by a multi-energy system (MES), modelled
by timed automata (TA). Ancillary services are the mean electrical grid system operators adopt to face events or criticalities,at different levels of power system. Multi-energy systems operate across several energy carriers. MESs are even more a precious resource for providing flexibility as ancillary services to system operators. The simulations proposed in the paper regard the provision of several (and contemporary) ancillary services by multiple devices of a MES requiring high real-time constraints and coordination among devices. Simulations are performed running several automata each one modelling a device in the MES. Automata are endowed by dynamics states linked by timed transitions that support the representation of dynamic behaviours of devices. The set of automata simulating the MES behaviours are supervised by suitable coordination strategies. These strategies keep balanced the energy carriers and manage the ancillary service provision when these are activated by system operator. Each coordination strategy is coded by mixed-integer quadratic programming.
