Between 22.06.-24.06., the European Energy Markets (EEM) Conference took place at the NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. SENERGY NETS was represented by Edoardo Corsetti (RSE) and Swaroop Rao (EIFER).
In their poster titled Is Flexibility just another form of Energy?, Edoardo and Swaroop, along with their co-author Claudia Vannucchi (EIFER) explored the flexibility potentials of multi-energy systems and provided policy recommendations for the further development of flexibility markets in Italy.
The EEM26 brought together timely discussions on how Europe can plan, operate, and govern a decarbonised energy system. The conference was well attended by researchers in Energy Markets and Energy Economics from all over Europe and beyond, offering multiple opportunities for networking. Here are some highlights :
- Seasonal storage and system decarbonisation: The opening plenaries focused on hydropower, large-scale storage, hydrogen, climate targets, fossil phase-out, and the policies needed to accelerate green innovation.
- Open, AI-enabled energy planning: A special session on open models, AI, and transparent infrastructure planning explores how open-source tools, AI-assisted workflows, and collaboration between researchers and grid operators can improve European grid development.
- Power markets under real-world grid constraints: The programme gives strong attention to market design, flow-based market coupling, bidding zones, adequacy, and resilience, linking economic design questions to the physical realities of the power system.
- Flexibility as a central transition theme: Sessions on local flexibility markets, energy communities, e-mobility, demand response, batteries, and integrated energy systems highlight the growing importance of distributed resources and local solutions in future energy systems.
