Value creation from energy system integration – Wrapping up for 2023

During 2023 the activities under the tasks T7.1, T7.2 and T7.3 of the Work Package 7 Value creation from energy system integration led by RSE, started to provide the following results.

Task 7.1 Scenario framework for value creation analysis on started in April 2023 (M8), in line with GA. The main source of information were the scenarios elaborated at EU level for the overall European Union as well as at each Member State level. A scenario framework was identified referring to 3 cases: business as usual (BAU), long-term deep decarbonization and long-term light decarbonization. Each scenario is thought to be endowed by several Topic Fields (TF), borrowed from EU scenarios; each TF is classified as Contextual (TF contributes to depict a Country/Regional perspective) and Operational (TF identifies a technical feature). The three scenarios were well identified in terms of TF of interest for the needs of the WP7.

Task 7.2 Quantification of technical flexibility, definition and calculation of MES specific KPIs started in July 2023 (M11), anticipating the GA (M12). The goal of this task is to identify and define a flexibility metric and KPIs relevant for MES supporting the value creation assessment phase. In this respect, RSE proposed a model representing and managing flexibility to provide services to TSO and/or DSO by MES.

Flexibility model for MES WP7

The Flexibility model proposed consists in identifying the flexibility at three main levels: technology (the plant/MES), Regulation and Market. Each one of these levels introduces potential for flexibility provision and possible barriers. Potential and barriers have to be clearly identified in order to pursue the goal to maximize the flexibility provided by MES.

For the definition of KPIs three main sources were identified: KPIs defined in the MAGNITUDE project – in particular in WP6, the High-Level Use Cases (HLUC) defined in task 2.5, the common practice of plant operators and literature. Specific sessions, named ‘Interviews’, were organized. In these meetings the task leader and the partners of a specific demo discussed the KPIs relevant for the assessment of the demo itself. The result of this work was the elaboration of three lists of KPIs, each one associated to a demo. In these days the task leader is proposing a final common list of KPIs to be accepted by the demo partners and then conclude this first activity in T7.1 represented by Milestone4.

The 7.3 Assessment of economic, environmental and social value creation and definition and quantification of related KPIs task started in August 2023 (M12), in line with GA. The goal of this task is to assess the domains of economic feasibility, territorial impacts, including social and environmental effects, of the MES engaging in flexibility provision for power transmission and/or distribution systems. The three demonstrators will be assessed according to the KPIs in close collaboration with WP4-5-6 and WP8 considering the results from WP2 and T7.1. The activity is currently focused in identifying the abilities of the different partners and organize the assessment step. This led to propose the following activity scheme.

organization scheme WP7

Figure 2 – T7.3 organisation scheme

The idea is to organize the assessment in terms of: technologies/plants, mainly in the methodology of demo/case study owners, Environmental, RSE developed a methodology to carry on environment analysis already exploited in other Italian and European projects in a fruitful way, and Local-socio economic value creation assessment stage, EIFER is specialist of this methodology.

The overall strategy identified by WP7 to organize the work related to the assessment of value creation in sector integration is well explained by the next scheme.

Source of data and concepts

High-Level Use Cases (HLUC) defined in T2.5 and the Primary Use Cases (PUC) currently under development in WP4-5-6 are originate the KPIs needed for the assessment of value creation in WP7. The scenario framework includes a subset of the KPIs identified and ensure the possibility to carry on the assessment in different contexts (Business As Usual – BAU, low and high decarbonization cases). The Environmental and Socio-Economic stages are integrated into the assessment as specific analysis. The assessment of value creation sketched is supported according to the tools specifically designed and developed in WP3.
